What do you need from me? Is the question that really connected me to your beautiful process of breaking my fears to embrace and overcome them.

This was a great technique. I practiced it today and it gave me a strong jumpstart to work as I became friend with the fear of getting the job done perfectly.

I found this meditation difficult to get my arms around, but I appreciated the fireside chat and I can really relate to these comments. I plan to listen to the podcast and may try the meditation again in the next few days.

I pondered fears I had in the past, having spent early years as a shy, quiet child, but only with people my age. As I got older, I lamented I wasn’t one of the popular girls (skinny girls need not apply) and feared trying to fit in with others. But I had ideas about what classes I might take, speech and drama, that would make me more comfortable, more outgoing, and that worked. College helped me gain knowledge and areas of competence that moved me farther forward. I married and had a career, well three.

I couldn’t think of what I fear now, but dread and stress might describe my feelings. I have neglected my files and have clutter: piles of papers and folders in the bedroom that serves as my office, financial, medical, recipes, documents for taxes, volunteer work, tech notes, travel paperwork, manuals and such for items from every room in the house and the garage. And lots and lots of what I write: essays, vignettes, poetry, whatever inspires me and won’t let go until I get to my computer or other device or even take pen and paper and pour out. I have experienced dread at getting at the sorting, shredding, recycling because it takes so long to clear a few documents and find suitable places for new categories. Today’s topic helped me to focus on this and think how I can face it and resolve all this loose stuff. Yes, I have orderly files, and I’m vetting them, and generally I have at fingertips what I need to produce. But the clutter!

Thank you for sharing your deep thoughts L. Clutter can feel like it’s taking over! But while it sits there, it’s almost an extension of our own mind feeling cluttered as well. It can really affect our clarity! You are not alone, believe me. If you can start with just 5 minutes every day dedicated solely to clearing some of the paperwork, it will feel so much better very quickly! Make this a priority, especially if it is causing you fear and stress in your life. Peace is worth it!

great meditation and talk on fear-thank you-your story at the end about your fear on marriage was very interesting—–FEAR=false evidence appearing real—–ANTS-automatic negative thoughts

    • So glad to hear you enjoyed the talk Zaneta! Yes, my fear about marriage certainly was false evidence appearing real. I’ve heard that acronym before, but I hadn’t heard of ANTS…thanks for sharing. I definitely have ANTS in my brain that I’m still rewiring 😉

I discovered that I don’t have many fears but what I do have is dread. It is a heavy feeling and sitting with it is difficult. Love your example of all of our emotions coming out of the same faucet or hose. Easy to see and understand. Also, the ‘Ten Reasons’ exercise provides a new way of looking at my feelings of dread. Thank you.

    • Thanks for sharing Linda. That’s a beautiful awareness that for you, these feelings show up as dread. So now you can get curious about your dread and give it love and compassion every time it shows up. I just listened to a great podcast with Elizabeth Gilbert on the Dax Shepherd podcast “Armchair Expert” and she talked about the fear she feels every time she sits down to write. She said she’s learned to give the fear love and compassion, and she invites it on the road trip, but it’s never allowed to drive. She said her fear can bring snacks, and throw a tantrum and say it doesn’t want to go on the trip, and it’s always still welcome…but it can never sit in the driver’s seat. She treats it just like an upset toddler, with love and patience and she always remains the adult who is in charge. I loved her description of it.
